Abstract
1432560 Strippable extruded cable layer BICC Ltd 10 Dec 1973 [11 Dec 1972] 56964/72 Heading B5A [Also in Division H1] In between the extruded dielectric and a conductive or semi-conductive dielectric screen of a cable core is interposed a mechanically weak intermediate layer of rubber or plastics insulating material bonded to both the dielectric and the screen such that, when stripping the screen from the core cover part of its length for jointing purposes, separation later place within the intermediate layer leaving a portion of that layer on the extruded dielectric. The dielectric and screen are of a rubber or plastics material and may be based on such compounds as ethylene-propylene rubber or cross-linked polyethylene. The intermediate layer may be an extrusion of, for example, an ethylene-propylene rubber compound containing a copolymer of ethylene-vinyl acetate and/or a filler. Extrusion process.-A conductor C passes through an extrusion head 1 where a conductor screen of, for example, a semi-conducting ethylene-propylene rubber based compound, and the dielectric, are applied simultaneously. These layers are then cured in treatment chamber 2 and an in-line scanner at 3 locates any voids in the dielectric. The intermediate layer is applied at 4 and the dielectric screen by extruder 5. The treatment chamber 6 cures the dielectric screen and because of diffusion effects also partially cures the intermediate layer. In cases where in-line scanning is not required the first curing step at 2 may be omitted and all layers cured at 6
