Abstract

1432442 Working at specified temperatures; casting processes P W KROGER OF AMERICA 14 March 1973 12188/73 Headings B3V and B3F [Also in Division C7] High strength forging are produced from an alloy containing in percentage by wt. by a process involving working at not less than 750‹ F., the separation being preceded and/or followed by a heat treatment at a temperature not less than 900‹ F., which temperature is reached by a maximum heating rate of 150‹ F. per hour. In preferred embodiments the alloy is cast with a chill rate of #2‹ F. per second and preferably # 10‹ F. per second while limiting the gas content of the melt to 0À15 ml. per 100 g. of molten metal in the mould by bubbling dry nitrogen through the melt, to produce an ingot having a dendritic cell size of 0À003 inch or preferably 0À001 inch maximum. The ingot is then homogenized at #860‹ F. before working into forging stock at < 750‹ F. with a deformation ratio of at least 8 : 1, followed by forging at #750‹ F., the treatment at #900‹ F. being carried out after the working and/or the forging operations. In the latter case the heating may be a solution treatment and may be followed by ageing at 215-250‹ F. for at least 6 hours, possibly followed by heating at 340- 360‹ F.
