Abstract

1431638 Tailstocks WERKZEUGMASCHINENKOMBINAT 7 OKTOBER BERLIN VEB 4 Dec 1974 [5 Dec 1973 13 March 1974] 52425/74 Heading B3T A tailstock comprises a housing 2 in which is located a non-rotatable, axially movable sleeve 3 which carries a centre 4 for a workpiece, the sleeve being connected to a rotary spindle 7 by way of a nut 5 fixed in the sleeve and engaging a thread on the spindle 7, the spindle being driven by a worm and wheel unit 8 from an electric brake motor 11. Within the housing 2 is fixed a cup-shaped spring housing 12 with disc springs 17, the housing 12 also locating pressure rings 14, 15 with a plurality of compression springs 16 therebetween. The ring 14 engages a thrust bearing 13 which abuts a shoulder on the spindle 7. At the opposite end of the housing 2 there is provided a switch 19 on a support 21 which is adjustable by way of threaded means 24 a calibrated dial 22, 23 permitting the adjustment to be indicated in force units. In operation a workpiece (not shown) is engaged with the centre 4 and the motor 11 started to rotate the spindle 7 which causes axial displacement of the sleeve 3 with the centre 4 until rigid engagement between the centre and workpiece occurs. This stops the displacement of the sleeve and causes axial displacement of the spindle 7 against the pressure of the springs 16 and 17. The spindle displacement continues until the conical end 28 of the spindle actuates the prepositioned switch 19 which stops the motor 11 and which maintains a predetermined axial force by the springs between the centre and workpiece which is indicated by the dial 23. The two spring systems shown permit an initial and a main force to be exerted by the centre on the workpiece.
