Abstract
1366498 Grinding LITTON INDUSTRIES Inc 3 Dec 1971 [16 Dec 1970] 56358/71 Heading B3D A machine 10 for grinding axially spaced coaxial portions, e.g. of a crank-shaft W comprises bearings 16, 17 mounting a grinding spindle 18, spindle bearing supports 41, 41<SP>1</SP> displaceable resiliently transversely of the spindle axis, sensing means 43, 44 for producing two signals indicative of the dimensions of the workpiece at respective axially spaced positions, means (48), Fig. 2 (not shown), for producing a third signal when the two signals differ by more than a predetermined amount, e.g. due to a taper grinding effect caused by non-parallel alignment of the workpiece W and spindle 18, and means 49, 49<SP>1</SP> responsive to the third signal to displace one or other of the bearing supports 41 or 41<SP>1</SP> to restore parallel alignment. The grinding spindle 18 supports a series of wheels 22-26 separated by spacers 27-32 and locked by rings 33, 34, and the workpiece W is supported between a headstock 38 and footstock 39, the sensing means, comprising gauge heads 43, 44, being advanced by hydraulic means 81, 82 to engage the spaced portions of the workpiece W after previous steps in a grinding cycle have ground the workpiece W to approaching the required dimensions. The bearing supports 41, 41<SP>1</SP> mount pressure posts 66, 66<SP>1</SP> engaged by plungers 57, 57<SP>1</SP>, and the signal producing means (48), comprising a differential comparator circuit, acts to operate an hydraulic piston 51 or 51<SP>1</SP> if non-parallel alignment is indicated. A rack 61 or 61<SP>1</SP> and pinion 58 or 58<SP>1</SP> act through a differential screw arrangement to advance the plunger 57 or 57<SP>1</SP>, which is held against rotation, so that the appropriate one of the supports 41, 41<SP>1</SP> is resiliently displaced to restore alignment. On reversing the hydraulic piston 51 or 51<SP>1</SP> to withdraw the plunger 57 or 57<SP>1</SP>, the supports 41, 41<SP>1</SP> resiliently return to a normal position. The parallel relationship may be maintained automatically by a circuit, Figs. 3A and 3B (not shown), or the means 49, 491 may be controlled manually.
