Abstract

1431558 Aerating liquids AMERICAN HOSPITAL SUPPLY CORP 5 June 1973 [19 June 1972] 26835/73 Heading B1C [Also in Divisions A5 and A6] An inhalation therapy humidifier comprises a bottle 4, Fig. 1, containing liquid 5, a partly submerged multi-stage mixing column 6 formed of a plurality of interconnected mixing chambers 7-12, forming modular units for humidifying gas by bubbling it through the liquid. The mixing column has a conduit 15 disposed therein, and formed by interconnected tubes 41, Fig. 3, for supplying dry gas to the lowermost chamber of the column. The chambers are connected by a snap fit engagement between an annular rib 35 on the lower flange 33 of one chamber and a groove 34 in an upper flange 32 of another chamber, with corresponding engagement of end 46 of tube 41, with surface 43. Gas is bubbled through holes 39, 40, in transverse sieve plates 18-21, separating the chambers 7-12. A bottom cap 17, Fig. 1, has an upper engaging flange and groove similar to 32, 34 and a transverse bottom wall (52) Fig. 4 (not shown) with holes (53) (54) therethrough for admitting liquid. Dry gas supplied from a source 1 through adaptor 2 emerges from the lower end 16 of conduit 15, passes up through the chambers 7-12 in column 6, is defoamed in a housing 14, and passes to the patient through tube 26. The adaptor 2, cap 3, and mixing column 6 may be permanently connected to the bottle 4. The mixing chambers and bottom cap may be made of thermoplastics material, such as polypropylene.
