Abstract
1431377 Gas separation IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 5 April 1973 [17 April 1972] 17582/72 Heading C1A [Also in Division B1] A process for treating I.C. engine exhaust gas containing nitrogen oxides and oxidizing and reducing compounds comprises providing for the reducing power of the gas to be at a level corresponding to an overall ratio of 0À95 to 1À0, the overall ratio being defined as the total weight of air supplied to the engine and to the exhaust gas before treatment divided by the total weight of fuel supplied to the engine and exhaust gas, and passing the gas over a catalyst containing rhodium. Where no air or fuel is added to the exhaust gas the overall ratio is the air/fuel ratio of the mixture provided at the engine inlet. The preferred ratio is 0À97 to 0À99. The reducing power of the gas is expressed as CO + H 2 -20 2 in volumes per cent, the preferred value is less than 1À3, e.g. 0À1 to 1À0. The catalyst comprises a refractory support, e.g. magnesia, alumina, silica, titania, zirconia, hafnia, thoria or chromia, or mixtures or compounds of these with each other or with oxides of calcium, strontium or barium. The surface area of the support is 0À02 to 30 sq. m./gm. and it is formed as discrete particles. The rhodium content is 0À001 to 5% by wt. preferably 0À005 to 5%. Other platinum group metals may also be present. The operating temperature is 200- 800‹ C., preferably 450-650‹ C. The space velocity is 20,000 to 200,000 especially 100,000/ hr. at full throttle.
