Abstract

1383896 Treating exhaust gases W R GRACE & CO 14 May 1973 [14 June 1972] 22886/73 Heading B1E [Also in Division F1] A process for converting noxious components of I.C. engine exhaust gas to less harmful entities, the process comprising contacting the exhaust gas with a catalyst comprising (i) rhodium, (ii) platinum, palladium or a mixture thereof and (iii) a support material, the weight ratio of component (ii) to component (i) reckoned as elemental metal being from 5:1 to 80:1, components (i) and (ii) being present as the elemental metals or as metal oxides. The catalyst may contain 0.001 to 0.05% rhodium. The support material may be alumina, silica-aluminas (e.g. mullite), silica, silicamagnesia, zirconia, zirconia-alumina or zirconia-magnesia, or it may comprise cordierite coated with mullite. The catalyst is prepared by impregnating the support material with solutions of rhodium and platinum and/or palladium salts (e.g. bromide, sulphate, chloride, nitrate, tetramine nitrate) followed by drying. To convert to the metal, reduction by hydrogen, carbon monoxide or formic acid vapour is used. To convert to the metal oxide, air calcining at 800‹ to 1800‹F is used.
