Abstract

1431302 Shearing; punching L SCHULER GmbH 28 Feb 1973 [1 March 1972] 9733/73 Heading B3W In a shear or punch press in which the tool is actuated by a ram 2 driven by a crank or other mechanical means, a force is applied to the ram to counteract the drive, by a mechanical braking or retarding element arranged to be activated by control means as the ram completes its movement through a cutting phase and just before the cutting tool breaks through material to be cut. As shown, a pair of hydraulically-operated pistons 11 mounted on the frame are applied to a braking strip 3 on the ram. Feeders on the ram may control the pistons 11 or a valve 8 in the hydraulic circuit to the pistons is actuated by a cam 7 driven by the press shaft 6. Alternatively, wedges (12), Fig. 2 (not shown), mounted on the press frame bear on complementary faces on the ram. Cooling liquid may act in or on the braking elements.
