Abstract
1430304 Aerials ELLIOTT BROS (LONDON) Ltd 1 Feb 1974 [17 March 1973] 12963/73 Heading H4A The landing gear beneath a flying machine incorporates a skid or other extensive member of conductive material, said member being isolated at least at one end thereof from the main body of the machine and being fed at one point only by a feeder from or to transmitting or receiving equipment. As described, a helicopter has a landing gear which consists of two skids one of which, referenced 1, is visible in Fig. 1. Said skid is carried from the main body 2 of the helicopter by struts 3, 4 each of which has an interposed moulded fibre-glass section 5. A cable 7 is connected at one end to the strut 4 beyond the section 5 and at the other end via a stand-off insulator 8 to radio equipment inside the helicopter. The aerial provided by the skid may be extended, for example, by wires extending therefrom to insulators on the main body of the machine. The skid on the other side of the helicopter is insulated from the body 2 in the same way as is the skid 1, and it may either be left isolated or be associated with the skid 1 by means of a cross-connecting cable (9), Fig. 2 (not shown). In another embodiment, instead of providing the insulating sections 5 the struts are mounted in insulating fibre bushes (10), Fig. 3 (not shown), provided in the main body of the helicopter. Considering the arrangement shown in Fig. 1, it is stated that if the strut 3 is not provided with an insulating section 5, but is left as a continuous member from the skid 1 to the main body 2, an arrangement functioning as a so-called skeleton notch aerial will result.
