Abstract

1430165 Polypropylene plexifilaments EIDU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO 8 Aug 1973 [14 Aug 1972] 37637/73 Heading B5B Plexifilaments are obtained by flash-spinning a solution of a propylene polymer in trichlorofluoromethane. The solution contains from 2 to 20% by weight of the polymer, which comprises at least 85% by weight of propylene units, at least 80% by weight of the polymer being isotactic polypropylene. The temperature and pressure of the solution are adjusted to 200‹ to 240‹ C. and greater than 900 p.s.i.g. respectively and the plexifilament produced by extruding this abruptly into a region of lower temperature and pressure. The melt flow rate (MFR) of the polymer is from 2 to 30 and is such that MFR/C#1À13-0À04 (T-220) where C is the concentration of the polymer in weight per cent and T the temperature in ‹C. It is preferred that the pressure is so adjusted that the solvent/polymer mixture is a single phase which, just before extrusion, is converted to a transient two-phase mixture. This may be accomplished by use of the spinneret illustrated in Fig. 3 where a single-phase solution passes through a let-down orifice 12 into a let-down chamber 13, where the pressure falls, before extrusion through the spinneret orifice 14. Orifice 14 terminates in an exit shroud 16 which has the function of spreading the expanding extrudate as widely as possible. To this end the shroud is a rectangle cut in a flat face. Alternatively a shroud as illustrated in Fig. 5 (not shown) which has a convex exit face.
