Abstract

1430072 Continuous polymerization of ethylene IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 4 July 1973 [13 July 1972] 32809/72 Addition to 1314828 Heading C3P Ethylene is polymerized continuously by contacting a catalyst with a mixture of hydrogen and ethylene in a reaction vessel, the ratio of ethylene to hydrogen in the vessel being kept constant at a value between 1 : 10 and 10 : 1, the total pressure being not greater than 40 kg./cm.<SP>2</SP>, the catalyst being introduced at such a rate as to keep the rate of polymerization constant, and the catalyst being the product of reacting particulate alumina or silica which has hydroxyl groups on the surface but is free of adsorbed water with a compound of formula MR m , where M is a Group IVa metal, vanadium or chromium, m is the valency of M and R is a hydrocarbon or substituted hydrocarbon group. Conveniently the ethylene may be introduced at a constant rate and the catalyst at such a rate as to keep the total pressure constant, continuously or in discrete portions. The melt flow index of the product may be selected by varying the proportion of hydrogen and/or the polymerization rate. The exemplified catalyst is zirconium tetrabenzyl on alumina; other suitable catalysts are as described in Specification 1,314,828.
