Abstract

1429889 Sand drains CHIYODA CHEMICAL ENG & CONSTRUCTION CO Ltd 23 July 1973 [22 May 1973] 35085/73 Heading E1F A flexible sand drain comprises a sand pillar enclosed in a tubular protector 11, Fig. 1, the protector consisting of monofilament woven fabric having sufficiently large meshes to permit passage of the sand to the pillar outwardly through the protector. The protector is formed from two strips of the woven fabric, e.g. polyethylene, the strips being joined along lines 19 spaced from the edges of the strips to provide elongate lugs 21. The method of installing the sand drains in soft ground comprises: arranging a plurality of casings 22, Fig. 8, in a regular polygonal form, each casing being provided with a sealing cover (36), Fig. 4 (not shown); driving the casings simultaneously into the ground by means of a pile-driver 23 having a vibro-hammer 24, a support 28 for the casings and an intermediate vibration-transmitting member 27; inserting a protector 11 into each casing; filling each protector with sand from a hopper 29; introducing compressed air into each casing through inlets (41) with the covers (36) closed; and withdrawing the casings 22 while also vibrating them with the vibro-hammer 24. If the sand drains are to be installed in subaqueous ground, the pile-driver is attached to a floating vessel (45), Fig. 9 (not shown), the protectors are inserted in the casings and filled with sand before driving, and a vibration-transmitting rod (46) is provided between the vibro-hammer and casing support (47).
