Abstract

1429450 Can treating apparatus STOLLE CORP 7 June 1974 [13 July 1973] 25384/74 Heading B8T Apparatus for treating cans prior to filling comprises means for transporting the cans with their open ends facing downward, through a series of treatment zones where they are sprayed with fluid from nozzles. Semi-cylindrical support members 2 on which the cans 1 are carried are secured to an endless line 8, the line being driven over pulleys (not shown) thereby moving the cans through the treatment zones. The cans, which are held loosely by the support members 2, are prevented from falling out by point contact members 14a, 14b. Fluid is sprayed on to the cans from a series of nozzles 6, 6a, 6b, the force exerted by the fluid ejected from the lower nozzle 6a being sufficient to lift each can from its support member until its base abuts a rail 7; this coupled with the transiational motion of the support members causes each can to rotate about its axis thereby exposing the whole of its inner and outer surfaces to the fluid jets. The treatment zones are enclosed in a series of tubes which are connected together to produce a form resembling a helix, Fig. 3 (not shown), different convolutions of the helix being devoted to different stages of the can treatment. The cans may initially be sprayed with a washing medium, then rinsed, after which they may be sprayed with a treatment fluid such as a protective coating and finally dried or cured in a stream of hot air.
