Abstract

1429157 Seals; pistons C S WHITE 14 Feb 1974 [14 Feb 1973] 6745/74 Headings F2B and F2T The preform of a piston or like sealing ring is made by impregnating a thread formed of fluorinated hydrocarbon fibres coated with metal or of a mixture of fluorinated hydrocarbon fibres and cotton or like fibres with a bonding resin, partially curing the resin to the B stage and winding the thread spirally, into the form of a flat washer (10, Fig. 1, not shown) while further heating it or applying solvent to it, to soften the resin sufficiently for the turns to stick together. The flat washer is thereafter placed between crimping dies (14, 15, Fig. 5, not shown) so that, on closing the dies, the washer is corrugated radially and held in this form while the dies are heated to cure the resin to the C stage. In use, the sealing ring is mounted over an elastomeric ring (52, 58, Fig. 6, not shown).
