Abstract

1428953 Furnaces CANADIAN LIQUID AIR Ltd 15 June 1973 [24 March 1972] 13937/72 Heading F4B A furnace for heating a charge 5, Fig. 1, comprises an enclosed chamber in which the charge is held so as to present a large surface, an inlet for air 9, an outlet for combustion gases 10, a burner 4 for fuel and a nozzle 1 for oxygen, the air 9 forming a slow-moving atmosphere above the charge and the oxygen forming a high-velocity blanket of incandescent gases, the air supply 9 being regulated so that the atmosphere has a pressure gradient serving to press the incandescent blanket against the surface of the charge. The oxygen nozzle may have a series of jets or an elongated slit. The furnace may consist of a rotating kiln, the oxygen nozzle then being at an angle parallel with the surface of the charge in the kiln (Fig. 2, not shown). The oxygen nozzles are mounted on a manifold cooled by the circulation of water.
