Abstract
1428935 Ash pit seal BABCOCK & WILCOX CO 8 July 1974 [11 July 1973] 30160/74 Heading F4B A seal between the bottom of a combustion chamber and an ash receptacle comprises a liquid containing trough surrounding the mouth of the ash receptacle, spaced skirts extending round the mouth of the ash receptacle and dipping into the liquid and means for supplying heated gas between two adjacent skirts. The seal may comprise three spaced skirts 86, 88, 90, extending into a trough 72 mounted on the shoulder of an ash hopper 62. The heated gas is delivered to the space between the two inner skirts 86, 88 and passes through holes in the middle skirt 88 to an outlet pipe 78 mounted on the outer skirt 90. The seal may have only two skirts, with the heated gas circulating between them, or bubbling through the liquid below them. The space between the skirts may be sealed at the bottom and the space between them maintained at above atmospheric pressure. The heat of the gas prevents the condensation of corrosive liquid on the skirts.
