Abstract

1428405 Electromagnetic transducers RANK ORGANISATION Ltd 3 May 1973 [26 May 1972] 24960/72 Heading H4J An electroacoustic transducer has two frame members 1 (Figs. 1, 2) preferably of polystyrene, each having an upstanding peripheral wall 4. A non-magnetic diaphragm 5 (Fig. 3) (e.g. of "MELINEX" (Registered Trade Mark) carrying a conductor 6 having parallel strip portions is located between and separates the frame members 1. The walls 4 of the frame members 1 project away from one another. Two magnet arrangements 7 rest on respective inwardly directed flanges 3 of the frame members 1. Each magnet arrangement 7 has parallel, spaced elongate magnet poles facing the diaphragm 5. The poles are aligned with the spaces between the strips of conductor 6 and adjacent poles are of opposite polarity. On each side a perforated backing sheet 9, e.g. of cadmium plated mild steel, contacts that face of the magnet arrangement 7 remote from the diaphragm 5. All the components are clamped together along at least two sides of the frame members 1. Several different diaphragms may be interposed between the frame members 1. Each magnet arrangement 7 preferably incorporates a perforated sheet of material consisting of magnetic particles embedded in a matrix of non-magnetic material. Alternatively each magnet arrangement consists of a plurality of strips of such material. The sheet or individual strips may be formed of stacked laminations. Each frame member 1 has pins 10 extending through holes in the other frame member, the ends of the pins 10 (Fig. 4) being deformed to form rivet heads clamping the assembly together. Gaps 3B in the frame flanges house a plug to connect to the ends of the conductor 6. Alternatively the ends of the conductor 6 may project beyond the confines of the frame member 1. In an alternative construction (Figs. 5 to 8, not shown), two opposite upstanding flanges 4 of each frame member 1 are bent inwardly to hold the magnet arrangement in place and the outer edges of adjacent faces of the frame members 4 are heat fused to one another (e.g. at an outwardly projecting lip) with the diaphragm 5 held between the members 4. In this arrangement the diaphragm 5 is gripped at two opposite edges only.
