Abstract

869,620. Sound receiving and transmitting devices. GAMZON, R. R., and FREI, E. H. Feb. 20, 1959 [March 7, 1958], No. 6007/59. Class 40 (4). A transducer comprises a flexible non-magnetic diaphragm which carries a pliable electric ribbon conductor, the conductor being positioned adjacent to but outside any air gaps between a number of magnetic poles. As shown in Fig. 2, the magnetic poles are formed in a number of discrete regions N, S in a magnet plate 1 of highly coercive oriented ferrite material such as barium ferrite, the plate having apertures 7 for air-pressure equalizing purposes, and a soft iron backing-plate (not shown). The diaphragm 2, Fig. 1, is formed of a synthetic polyester material such as polyethylene, glycol or terephthalate and carries a thin printed aluminium conductor 5, the conductor being positioned adjacent to and overlying the regions of opposite magnetic polarity. In a modification, Fig. 5, the magnet plate comprises magnetic bars such as 1a, 1b mounted on a soft iron backing-plate 4a. Improved efficiency is stated to be obtained by the use of a diaphragm 2a positioned between two magnet plates as shown in Fig. 6. In a modification, Fig. 7, weight is reduced by tapering the magnet bars, and the diaphragm supports a conductor 5d, 5e on each face of which one may serve as a feed-back conductor. A circular magnet plate 8 and associated diaphragm 9 are shown in Figs. 8 and 9, respectively, the plate magnetization and conductor 10 configurations being in the form of two intertwined spirals. The conductor ends at terminals 11, 11a and the magnet plate is formed with a central aperture 12. It is stated that the transducer may be associated with a horn for the reproduction of signals in the higher audio frequency range, Fig. 11 (not shown). An alternative transducer may have the conductor and plate magnetization arranged in the intertwined labyrinth pattern shown in Fig. 12. In a further arrangement, Fig. 13, a hollow ferrite cylinder 18 is surrounded by a cylindrical diaphragm 19 on which a conductor 20 is imprinted.
