1428309 Grinding tools; milling INST SVERKHTVERDYKH MATERIAL AKAD NAUK UKRAIN SSR and VITEB SPETSIAL KONSTRUKT BJURO ZUBOOBRABATYVAJUSCHIKH 28 Feb 1974 9023/74 Headings B3D and B3K A machine for grinding a tool 10 having a shank 14 fitted with a hard-alloy element 15 comprises a grinding head 17 having a diamond wheel 20 for grinding a front clearance surface 12 of the element and a second diamond wheel 21 for grinding a chip-breaking groove 16 in the element, and a milling head 22 having a milling cutter for machining the front clearance surface 12 of a shank. The tool is mounted in a device 5 having an hydraulically-operated clamp 9 and a part 35 which is angularly adjustable on a work-table 3 to position the tool at a desired cutting angle. The work table is reciprocated along guide ways 2 on a base 1 by an hydraulic drive 4. The grinding head 17 is mounted on the base 1 and is vertically adjustable to determine the depth of the chip-breaking groove 16 by a screw mechanism 29 driven by gearing 30 from a hand wheel 31. The head 17 has a drive 18 for a spindle mounting the diamond wheels 20, 21. Wheel 20 has a surface 27 for grinding the clearance face 12 of the hard alloy element 15 and the spacing between the wheels is adjustable to vary the distance of the chip-breaking groove 16 from the face 12. The base 1 also mounts the milling head which has the cutter 23 for the face 12 of the shank 14 of the tool, the axis 0-0 of the cutter being inclined at an angle α from the axis 0<SP>1</SP>-0<SP>1</SP> of the diamond wheels so that the diamond wheel 20 does not engage the holder. An eccentric sleeve in the milling head permits vertical adjustment of the milling cutter. The tool is positioned by a spring element 28 acting on the device 5 to engage the tool with a stop 19 which is adjustable to determine the depth of cut of the wheel 20 and milling cutter. In operation, the tool is placed in the device 5 and upon pressing a start-button the tool is clamped in the device 5 which is then moved by the spring element 28 to engage the tool with the stop 19. The drive 4 then moves the work-table 3 so that, in a single pass, the clearance surface of the shank 14 is milled by the cutter 23, and the chip-breaking groove 16 and clearance face of the element 13 are ground by the wheels 21, 20.
