Abstract

1427578 Tunnelling machines; universal joints GEWERKSCHAFT EISENHUTTE WESTFALIA 13 July 1973 [15 July 1972 20 Dec 1972] 33522/73 Headings E1F and E2F In a tunnelling machine of the type in which a rotary cutting head 13 is mounted on a support ring 17 within a cylindrical shield 10, the support ring can be moved both longitudinally on guide means along the shield and pivotally with respect to the shield via universal joints mounted between support ring and guide means. In the embodiment shown brackets 18 on the ring 17 carry, via universal joints 19, guide members 20 which can slide in guideways 21 on the shield. Each joint 19 comprises a mounting block 24 which carries a pin 23 pivotable about a vertical axis in member 20, and pin 26 which extends through horizontal bores in the bracket 18 and the block 24. A circular array of advancing rams 28 extend between ring 17 and abutments 30 and adjustment of individual rams affects the pivotal movement of the ring and cutting head 13. In a further embodiment of universal joint (Figs. 3-5, not shown) tapered ends of the brackets 18 can pivot about horizontal axes in a cylindrical spigot (38) which is engaged for pivotal movement in a vertical bore in a sliding guide member (20).
