Abstract

1426256 Guns for mixing and spraying materials W R BROOKS 9 Oct 1973 [16 Nov 1972] 47021/73 Headings B1C and B2F Dispensing apparatus for mixing and discharging a multi-component spray material, comprises spray material component supply containers (16), (17), Fig. 1 (not shown) a dispensing gun housing 22 having a handle 23 and valves 25, 26, Fig. 4, for controlling respective flows of spray material through the gun 14, conduits 19, 20 conveying spray material between respective supply containers and respective valves, a manually operable trigger 27 mounted on the housing 22, for controlling the valves and a detachable mixing and dispensing nozzle 29 internally shaped to assist the mixing of the separately received spray material components, the nozzle having a single helically configured mixing guide mounted on a solid central cylindrical stem and exit means 47, Fig. 3, to discharge the mixed spray material in a predetermined direction. The dispensing gun is characterised by the provision of a nozzle seating 50, Fig. 4, for orienting the nozzle in a predetermined discharging position and a nozzle latch mechanism 54, Fig. 3, mounted on the housing for selectively retaining the detachable nozzle is a rigidly secured position relative to the housing or alternatively releasing the nozzle for removal from the seating. The latch mechanism 54 includes a latch lever 55, pivotally mounted by, e.g., a transverse pin 56. A retaining finger 57 engages an annular step 58 on the nozzel base 51. Depression of a thumblever portion 59 of the latch lever 55 rotates said lever about a pivot pin 56, Fig. 3, thus removing the latch finger 57 from the annular step 58 and freeing the used nozzle 29 for ejection. A nozzle ejector lever 60 on the latch lever 55 engages with the rear surface 61 of the used nozzle and on depresion of the thumblever portion 59 the nozzle is removed from its seat 50. Latch lever 55 is normally biassed into its retaining position by a coil spring 63, Fig. 3. A keyway slot (65), Fig. 6, (not shown) in the housing 22 and a mating guide follower, a key (66), Fig. 6, (not shown) aids the positioning of a replacement nozzle. Valves 25, 26 have valve seats 68, 69 deformably engaged by spherical valve balls 71, 72, Fig. 4, to form a fluid-tight seal. Plungers 74, 75, slidably mounted within the housing 22 are connected to trigger 27 by expanded heads 77, 78, engaging slots 70 and 80. Upon operation of the trigger 27, balls 71, 72 are unseated and flow of spray material is permitted. Trigger 27 is normally biassed away from housing 22, e.g. by a wire spring (85), Fig. 5, (not shown) plungers 74, 75 then being pulled away from ball members 71, 72 which are therefore seated on members 68, 69 to form a fluid-tight seal. A safety mechanism 87 mounted on a lower surface portion of the gun handle 23 is rotated from a position shown in Fig. 3 to that shown in Fig. 5 to prevent motion of the trigger. A compression spring 88 urges the safety mechanism into frictional engagement with housing 22, preventing accidental rotation of said mechanism. The nozzle 29 has a diametrically extending slot 47 which forms a fan-shaped discharge. Alternatively, one or more substantially round discharge openings may be provided.
