Abstract

1425609 Internal combustion engines: fuel injection pumps SOC ANON DE VEHICULES INDUSTRIELS ET D'EQUIPEMENTS MECANIQUES 22 May 1973 [24 May 1972 15 Nov 1972 24336/73 Heading F1A and F1B Starting of an I.C. diesel engine is facilitated by rendering some cylinders more suitable for stating the engine, e.g. by having a smaller unswept volume to increase the compression ratio, and the others more suitable for running the engine under full power. In the six-cylinder engine shown, two cylinders, 3 and 4, act as starting cylinders. The unswept volume is decreased by reducing a chamber (10 4 ), Fig. 2A (not shown), in the top of the piston or, Fig. 2B (not shown), by reducing an injection chamber (8 4 ) in the cylinder head. Also, the inlet closure delay of the starting cylinders is reduced to 16 degrees of crank angle as compared to the 45 degrees for the power cylinders. The fuel supply to the starting cylinders is less than to the power cylinders. This may be effected by setting the starting cylinder injection pumps, e.g. 12D, to deliver less fuel than the power cylinder pumps e.g. 12P. The quantity of fuel in the delivery lines is determined by limit return valves 23D, Fig. 3, which allow a quantity of fuel represented by 24D to return to the pump during a subsequent part of the pump cycle. With an in-line injection pump the quantity of fuel delivered by each plunger may be determined by the setting of the plungers 13P, 13D relative to the rack or by modifying the upper profile of the piston. The injection lead may be changed by altering the rotational position of the cams 14D. When the pump is of the rotary type Fig. 8 (not shown) the distribution passages may be staggered to alter the injection lead. In Fig. 6 (not shown) a V-8 cylinder engine has two starting cylinders under a common cylinder head and, Fig. 7 (not shown) a flat 12 cylinder engine has three starting cylinders. In another arrangement, Fig. 10 (not shown) oriface plates restrict the air-flow into the starting cylinders.
