Abstract

The diesel engine comprises a set of starting cylinders and a set of power cylinders. Means are associated with the starting cylinders, which make the starting cylinders more suitable for starting the engine than the power cylinders, and means are associated with the power cylinders which means make the power cylinders more suitable for running the engine under full power than the starting cylinders. The diesel engine tedns to start easily and has a high performance under reduced mechanical stress conditions, particularly if the engine is a supercharged engine. The starting cylinders may have a higher volumetric compression ratio than the normal compromise assuring normal power in order to provide the means referred to above.
