Abstract

1425473 Sectional heat exchangers; water tube boilers G APPLEGATE 29 Jan 1973 [27 Jan 1972] 3819/72 Headings F4S and F4A A sectional heat exchanger, particularly for use in gas or oil fired water heaters, is made up of a plurality of side-by-side heat exchange units each comprising a pair of header sections 10, 11 interconnected by one or more finned tubes 12, 13. Each header section 10 is formed with an internal tapered socket 20 at one end and an externally tapered surface 21 at the opposite end, the ends of adjacent header sections being aligned and interfittingly received one within the other to define common supply and discharge headers. Tie bolts 16 are provided to hold the header sections together in fluid-tight relationship. Relative movement between adjacent sections may be limited by the provision of steps or shoulders (25, Fig. 5) on the internal and external tapered surfaces. In an alternative construction (Fig. 4, not shown) the header sections are each conically tapered from end to end. As shown, each tube is in the form of a U-tube having straight portions 12, 13 connected by a return bend 14. Alternatively the tube may be in the form of a serpentine tube (see Fig. 8). Adjacent straight portions of each U- or serpentine tube may have mutually different diameters (see Figs. 9, 10 and 11, 12).
