Abstract

1425268 Coating BURNS & RUSSELL CO OF BALTIMORE CITY 28 Feb 1973 [5 July 1972] 9864/73 Heading B2E [Also in Divisions C3] A panel or wall member having a simulated traditional sand-finished masonry appearance comprising a rough surface applied to a porous substrate which surface is hard and waterrepellent but which permits diffusion of moisture is produced by applying to the porous substrate a composition comprising a thermosetting resin and at least 50% by weight of a filler the filler having been treated with 0.01 %-2% by weight of an alkylene substituted silane or siloxane, the composition being trowelled or otherwise pressure smeared on the surface and then cured. The thermosetting resin may be an ethylenically unsaturated alkyd, polyurethane, an epoxy resin and optionally a polymerisable vinyl monomer, e.g. styrene. The composition may be sprayed on to the substrate, then trowelled and then rolled. The components of the composition may be separately sprayed and mixed in the course of spraying. The substrate may be a concrete block. A wall may be constructed by placing the coated blocks one upon the other as shown in Figure 1 and the joints 4 mortared with conventional mortar. Additional mortar joints may be cut away with a saw and mortared as shown at 5. Other substrates mentioned are building blocks or panels made from cinders, slag, haydite, clay, sand, sandlime, gasbetone, gravel with cement as a binder. The filler may be sand, ground bricks. The filler may be treated with the silane or siloxane as a vapour or liquid or solution. The surface composition may also contain a polymerisation catalyst, pigments, ultra-voilet or actinic absorbents.
