Abstract

1424894 Impregnated graphite STANDARD OIL CO 30 April 1973 [8 May 1972] 20426/73 Heading C1A [Also in Division H1] An electronically conducting, ionic insulating current collector or inter-cell connector for a capacitive device (see Division H1) comprises flexible graphite sheet impregnated with polymeric material. The graphite may have anisotropic conductively and the impregnant is preferably rendered conductive by loading with carbon black in which case it is preferably an elastomer, e.g. natural or synthetic rubber. Low M.W. impregnants may be applied in fluid form, higher M.W. impregnants as solutions. Non- conductive impregnants may be applied as low M.W. precursors subsequently cured in situ, e.g. butyl rubbers, vinyl nitriles, acrylonitrile and polyacrylonitrile may then be charred in situ. Solutions may be applied by vacuum impregnation, brush or spray coating. Liquid polymer may be painted on to one graphite sheet, covered with a second sheet and the two pressed together to force the polymers into the pores of both. In any case where an elastomer is used, it may be cured by nuclear, ultraviolet or infra-red radiation, steam, hot air or vulcanization.
