Abstract
An electrically conductive coating for use as a heating surface is applied in the form of not less than 40% of an electrically conductive particulate carbonaceous medium of size predominantly 45-125 microns contained in a liquid insulant. The medium may be pitch, furnace or foundry coke, the conductivity of which may be increased by calcination. Electrodes may be applied to the sheet by coating them with a conductive material and bonding them to the sheet before its installation or in situ. A further sheet of material containing additives or fillers which provide an insulating outer surface may be applied to the sheet. Large sheets can be formed by spraying on a backing sheet which is then peeled off. The insulant may be natural rubber latex or a synthetic polymer latex such as P.V.C. latex, polyvinylidene chloride latex, polyvinylacetate latex, polyvinyl alcohol latex or polyvinylpropionate latex.
