Abstract

The windings of electrical machines are provided with a preformed porous insulating sheath which is pretreated with a flexible electrically conducting coating, and are impregnated with an insulating thermosetting resin after the sheath has been placed in position. The flexible conducting layer provides an equipotential surface for stators of high voltage generators and an impervious layer preventing electrical dishcharges due to inclusion of air pockets and uneven expansion of the impregnant. The porous sheath may be of e.g. paper and silicone resin which is flexible and rendered conductive by inclusion of e.g. graphite, is used to coat it before vacuum impregnation of the windings with thermosetting resin after placing the sheath in position.
