Abstract

1424438 Apparatus for electroslag refining INSTITUT ELEKTROSVARKI IMENI E O PATONA AKADEMII NAUK UKRAINSKOI SSR 25 April 1973 19542/73 Heading B3F [Also in Divisions H3-H5] The electrodes 7 of an electroslag plant are connected in two similar groups, one group being connected to one end of the secondary winding of a single phase supply transformer and the other group being connected to the other end of the secondary winding, the electrodes themselves being arranged so that electrodes of one group alternate with electrodes of the other group when proximate electrodes will be of opposite polarity; the base-plate 13 and water cooled mould 5 being connected to the midpoint of the secondary winding. The spacings between proximate electrodes is equal, and is from 0À1 to 2À0 times the smallest electrode dimension viewed in cross-section. The mould and base-plate can reciprocate horizontally along a rectilinear or curved path through a distance at least half as great as the greatest spacing between centre points of the crosssections of proximate electrodes. The electrode holder is similarly rotatable and traversable in a horizontal plane. A liquid-level gauge 16 is mounted in the mould wall and a slag hole 18 is provided for tapping slag from the mould into a container 21 after withdrawal of the plug 19. Alternatively a siphon (40) may be used to remove slag from the mould, Fig. 8 (not shown). The electrodes are mounted so that at least 20% of their total cross-sectional area is disposed under the mould space adapted to shape the ingot and steel blanks, isolated from electric current, may be installed between electrodes of unlike polarity.
