Abstract

142,442. Jones, G. A. E. April 25, 1919, [Convention date]. Heating by electricity.-In an apparatus for electrically heating and heading rivets in situ, a movable electrode is used in combination with a portable rivet heading apparatus so that the same operator may first apply the electrode, then remove it, and then apply the header. Electrodes 2, 20, connected to a transformer 4 are pressed against the projecting ends of the rivets 50, 51 while their heads are connected by a copper block 6 having a flange 60 to assist in positioning and an insulated shield 8 and handle 9. The electrodes are preferably arranged to slide in brackets 12 carried by hammers 5 and are normally withdrawn by springs 14. Each electrode may be enclosed in an insulated shield 22, Fig. 2, and cooled by fluid, preferably from the hammer exhaust 24, which passes through channels 25, 26, 27, 28. Specification 127,798, [Class 83 (iv), Metals, Working], is referred to.
