This invention relates to electric riveting machines,"and particularly'to machines ofthis class employing pneumatic, hydraulic or similar power for operating the working parts of the machine, and the object of my invention is to provide a simple, practical and efficient machine of the class and for the purpose specified, and a further object being to providean electric heating apparatus for machines of the class s ecified, which is simple in construction an opera tion.

and in this connection, it will be noted that the heads 34 and 39 on the upper ends of the electrode and plunger die respectively are of the same dimensions as the diameter of the plunger, whereby on the descent of said plunger, the holder 30 is held in alinement and locked against movement, and it will be also noted that only when said heads are brought into proper alinement with the plunger, the said plunger can be operated.
Mounted in the head 15, is a work piece supporting die 46, which eiitends through said head and provided with a reduced bottom threaded portion 47, on which is mounted a nut 48, and said die is hollow in form and construction, and adapted to receive a water pipe 49, having an inlet connection 50 and outlet connection 51, whereby said die, which serves in the operation of the machine, as hereinafter described as an electrode, is water cooled. The upper or face portion of said die is provided with a recess 52, adapted to receive the head of rivet blank 53, as clearly shown in Fig. 1.
Mounted in the hollow back portion 12 of the frame 11, is an electric transformer 54, having leads or conductors and 56, said transformer being placed in connection with any suitable source of electrical supply, by means of wires 57 and 58. The free end of the lead 55 is connected with a contact casing 59, which is hollow in form as indicated at 60, and with which the head 36 of the electrode 32 is-connected by means of a nut 61 on said electrode, and connected with the contact casing 59 are water supply and exhaust pipes 62 and 63, whereby water may be passed through said casing to cool the head 36 of said electrode.
The exhaust pipe 63 is adapted to coil around the lead 55, as shown at 64, to
coolsaid lead and the end of said pipe is adapted to be connected with the transformer, as indicated at 65, and connected with the outlet connection 51, is a pipe 66,
which is adapted to coil around the lead 56, as shown at 67, and the end thereof connected with the transformer, as shown at 68, and the water passed through the pipes 63 and 66 and coils 64 and 67, is adapted to pass through the transformer 54- to cool same, and discharged therefrom by a pipe 69' which passes through the back portion rename of the frame 11, as clearly indicated in Fig. l.
Connected with the free end of the lead 56, is a contact member 7 0, which is clamped or otherwise held in engagement with the shank of the die 46, as indicated in Fig. 1 of the drawing, whereb the current from the transformer is acfhpted to pass through the lead 56, contact member 70 to the die 46, as readily understood. Mounted on the die 46 above the contact member 70, is a magnetic coil 71, placed in connection with any suitable source of electrical supply, by means of wires 72,, whereby the die 46 may be magnetized and serve to hold the plates 73 in firm contact with the head of the rivet blank 53 in the operation of connecting the same by said rivet blank as hereinafter described.
My improved machine or apparatus may be used as a portable machine, which is suspended from a crane in the usual manner, said crane having a depending chain or chains not shown, said chain being provided at the lower end thereof with a hookshaped member 74, which is adapted to be connected with a bale 75, pivoted to the frame, as indicated at 7 6 in Fig. 1, in which position the frame or machine will be truly balanced, but my invention is not limited to this form of mounting or supporting the machine, as the same may be mounted on a floor or bedplate in the position, shown in Fig. 1, or a position at right angles to that and the plunger die 37 are in their raised positions, it being understood that the workpiece consisting of the plates '73 with the rivet blank 53 passed therethrough, is supported onthe die 46, as shown in Figs. 14--5 and 6. The first operation is to move the electrode 32, in contact with the protruding end of the rivet blank 53, which is accomplished by moving the lever 28 to admit air from a compression tank not shown into the cylinder 24, to move the piston 23 longitudinally thereof, which operation operates the toggle levers 17 and 18, to depress the plunger 16 until said electrode is in contact with said rivet blank, in which position it is held until said rivet blank is heated to the desired extent after which said lever 28 is operated to shut off the supply of air, which permits the movement of the lines in Fig. 7 by manipulating the rod 44 by hand as hereinbefore described, movement of said holder is guided by an enlarged head portion 77 on the lower end of the head 15, which enlarged head portion is clearly shown in Figs. 2 3-5-6 and 7-, and
this operation brings the plunger die 37 in,

and is adapted to operate in connection with the plunger die 37, as hereinafter described.
In this form of construction, the lower die that shown in Figs. 1 to 7 inclusive, and forms one of the electrodes of the heating-apparatus. The normal position of the parts are shown in Fig. 8, and
when it is desired to heat the rivet blank 53, passed through the plates 73, the electrode 78 is swung into the in Fig. 9 by tion after which the lever 28 is operated to osition shown the piston and toggle levers, as in the construction 1n Figs. 1 to 7 inclusive, to depress connected therewith, which. operation will move the hand, and held in such a posi- ,admit air into the cylinder 24, to operate electrode 78 downwardly into engagement with the protruding end ofthe rivet blank 53, in which operation saidv electrode is guided-by theelon ated apertures 82, and said electrode is helfinsuch position-by the air in the cylinder '24 until such rivet blank is heated to the desired extent, after which the air supply is shut off and the plunger and plunger die returned to their normal positions, and said electrode to its normal position-by the spring 83, after which the plunger die 37 is again depressedor .moved downwardly by introducing air into the cylinder 24, and the heated rivet blank will be fashioned or heated in the manner shown in Fig. 6.
The construction shown in Figs. 8 to 10 inclusive of myimproved electric apparatus,
may be connected with machines of the class specified without materially changing the form and construction thereof, and while I have shown certain details of construction for accomplishing the desired result, my invention is not limited to such details as shown in the accom anying drawings, and changes therein an modifications thereof maybe .made within the scope of the appended claims without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. Ina machine of the class described, a
plunger, a plunger die operated by said plunger, an electrlc transformer, a work piece supporting die in electrical connection with said transformer, an electrode in electrical connection with said transformer and adapted to be moved into position between said plunger and a work piece mounted in said supporting die, and means for operating said plunger to move said electrode into contact with said work piece to, heat the same prior to the operation of said plunger die on said workpiece to fashion the same.
2. In a machine of the class described, a
plunger, a plunger die operated by said plunger, an electric transformer, a work piece supporting die in electrical connection with said transformer, an electrode in electrical connection with said transformer and adapted to be moved into position between said plunger and a work piece mounted in said supporting die, means for operating said plunger to move said electrode into contact with said work piece to heat the same,
and means for moving the plunger die into alinement with the heated work piece whereby the operation of the plunger will move said die into engagement with said work piece to fashion the same.

In a machine of the class described, a plunger, a plunger die operated by said plunger, an electric transformer, a work with said transformer, an electrode in electrical connection with said transformer and adapted to be moved into position between said plunger and a work piece mounted in said supporting die, means for operating said plunger to move said electrode into contact with said work piece to heat the same, and means for cooling said electrode and said supporting die.

In a machine of the class described, a plunger, a plunger die operated by said plunger, an electric transformer, a work piece supporting die in electrical connection with said transformer, an electrode in electrical connection with said transformer and adapted to be moved into position between said plunger and a work piece mounted in said supporting die, means for oper-' ating said plunger to move said electrode into contact withsaid-work piece to heat the same, and meansfor cooling said transformer and the leads thereof.

In a machine of the class described, a frame, a plunger mounted therein, an electrode and plunger die holder mounted to move transversely of said plunger to bring said electrode and plunger die successively into alinement with said plunger, a work piece supporting die and means for operating the plunger to bring said electrode and plunger die successively into contact with a work piece mounted .in said supporting 6. In a machine of the class described, a frame, a plunger mounted therein, an electric transformer, an electrode and plunger die holder mounted to move transversely of said plunger, means for operating said holder to bring said electrode and plunger die successively into alinement with said plunger, said electrode being in electrical connection with said transformer, a work piece supporting. die in electrical connection with said transformer, and means for operating the plunger to bring said electrode and plunger die successively into contact with a work iece mounted in said supporting die.
7. n a machine of the class described, a frame, a plunger mounted therein, an electric transformer, an electrode and plunger die holder mounted to move transversely of 7 said plunger, means for operating said holder to bring said electrode and plunger die successively into alinement with said plunger, said electrode being in electrical connection with said transformer, a work piece supporting die in electrical connec tion with said transformer, means for operating the plunger to bring said electrode and plunger die successively into contact with a work piece mounted in said supporting die, and means for magnetizing said supporting die to hold the work piece in piece supporting die in electrical connection firm contact therewith.

In a machine of the class described, a frame, a plunger mounted therein, an electric transformer, an electrode and plunger die holder mounted to move transversely of said plunger, means for operating said holder to bring said electrode and'plunger die successively into alinement with said plunger, said electrode being in electrical connection with said transformer, a work piece supporting die in electrical connection with said transformer, means for operating the plunger to bring said electrode and plunger die successively into contact with a work piece mounted in said supporting die, means, for magnetizing said supporting die to hold the work piece in firm contact therewith, and means for' cooling ,said electrode, supporting die and transformer.

In an electric riveting apparatus, the combination with the plunger die and the work piece supporting die which forms one of the electrodes of the heating apparatus, of an electrode movable toward and from a work piece mounted in said supporting die by the means for o crating the plunger die whereby said wor piece may be heated prior to its fashioning by said plunger die.
10. In an electric riveting apparatus, the
combination with the plunger and plunger die, and the means for operating the same, and a work piece supporting die, of an electrode adapted to be moved into position between said plunger ed in said supporting die, whereby the operation of said plunger will move said electrode into contact with said work piece to heat the same prior to the fashioning thereof by said plunger die. y
11. In an electric riveting apparatus, the combination with a pneumatically operated plunger die of an electrode operated by said plunger die and adapted to heat a work piece prior to its fashioning by said die,

In a machine for heating metals electrically prior to shaping the same, the combination with a plunger die and work piece supporting die, of an electrode adapted to be moved into position between said dies, and means for moving said electrode and plunger die toward said supporting die to heat a work piece supported in said die.

In a machine of the class described, a U-shaped frame, a plunger mounted therein, atoggle mechanism for operating said plunmechanism, an electrode and plunger die holder movable transversely of said plunger, andmeans for operating said holder to bringsai'd electrode and plunger die successively into line with said plunger.

In a machine of the class described, a frame, a plunger mounted therein, a toggle mechanism for operating said plunger, means for operating said toggle mechanism, an electrode and plunger die holder movable transversely of said plunger, a work piece supporting die mounted in said frame in line' with said plunger, and means for placing said work piece supporting die and elec- 4 trode in electrical'connection with an electrio transformer, whereby the work piece supported by said die may be heated by moving said electrode into contact therewith, and then fashioned by saidplunger die.

In a machine of the class described, for riveting a plurality of parts together, a stationary ndie adaptedto support a rivet blank, a heading die movable toward and .from' said stationary die, and electrical means for magnetizin said stationary die to hold said parts in rm contact with the and a work piece mountcontact with plunger,

Iii a machine of the class described for riveting a plurality of parts together, a stationary die adaptedto support a rivet blank passed through said parts, a pneumatically operated electrode movable toward and from said rivet blank and'adapted to heat the same, and a pneumatically operated plunger die adapted to be brought in said heated rivet blank to head the same. In a machine of the class described, a plunger, a plunger die operated by said an electric transformer, a work piece supporting die in electrical connection with said transformer, an electrode in electrical connection with said transformer and adapted to be moved into position between said plunger and a work piece mounted in said supporting die, means for operating said plunger to move said electrodeiinto contact with said work piece to heat the same, means for moving the plunger die into alinement with the heated work piece whereby the operation of the plunger will move said die into engagement with said bination with a plunger die and a work piece supporting die of a hand operated electrode adapted to be moved into position between said dies, and means for operating the plunger die to move said electrode toward said operating die to heat a work piece supported in said dies.

In a machine for heating metals electrically prior to shaping bination with a plunger, of an electrode and plunger die operated by said plunger, a work piece supporting die, and means for operating said plunger to move said electrode and plunger die successively into contact with a work piece mounted in said supporting die to electrically heat and then fashion said work piece.
21. In an electric riveting apparatus, the
die, of a pneumatically operated electrode brought into contact with a work piece supported in said die to heat the same, and a pneumatically operated plunger die independent of said electrode and adapted to be brought into contact with said heated work piece prior to fashioning thesame;

In a machine of the class described, a stationary die adapted to support a work piece, an electrode movable toward and from said stationary die and adapted to heat the work piece supported therein, a heading the same, the com- 115 combination with a work piece supporting v die movable toward and from said station ary die and adapted to fashion said heated -WOIk piece, and electrical means for magnetizing said stationary die to hold said Work piece in firm contact therewith in the operation of heating and fashioning the same.
