Le it known that I', FRANK P. Konn'r, a citizen of the United States, and residing at Amityville, in the county' of Sutlolk and State otNew York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in the Process and Apparatus for Working Metals, of
'which the following is a specification, such as lwill enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to Amake and use the same.
This invention relates to metal working machines such as heating, re-heating, rivet-y ing and welding machines, and my inven! tion consists in the introduction of an electric apparatus whereby a newapparatus or machine is produced, and anew method or process of operation performed in the worklng or fashiomng of metal, and the object of my invention is to provide a simple, practical and efficient process and apparatus for accomplishing the desired result.
In the accompanying drawing, I have shown for illustration a riveting machine of pneumatic, hydraulic or similar type provided with an electric heating apparatus of simple construction and operation Whereby a rivet blank may be electrically heated prior to its 4lasliioning or heading by the heading or plunger lie.
The invention' is fully disclosed in the following specification,ofivhich the accompanying dra-wing forms apart, in-Which the separate `parts of my improvement are designated bysuitable reference characters in each ofthe views, and in Which:-

In Figs. 1 to 3, inclusive, I have indicated at 11, the frame of the machine which is U-shaped in form and comprises a back member 12, a top arm 13 and bottom arm 14 said arms being provided at their ends with Specification of Letters Patent.

heads 15 and 16 respectively. Mounted in the head 15 and vertically movable th/erein, is a plunger die 17, connected with a plunger not shown, and connected with the plunger is a toggle construction 18, composed oi toggle levers pivoted to a toggle socket at 19, said lsocket being provided with a lever 20, connected with a piston rod 21, which is pivoted in a piston movable longitudinally of an air cylinder 22, said piston being not shown. The cylinder 22 is provided with the usual. controlling valve 23 provided with an air supplypipe 24 and a hand operated controlling rod or lever'2.
The toggle construction and the means for operating the same, consisting oi the air cylinder 22' and the parts connected there-With, is the same as usually, employed in machines of this class, and it will he understood 'that any construction of this class may be used for the purpose herein set out. Mounted in the arm 1l is a stationary work piece supporting die the top ot which is provided with a recess 2T, and mounted on the shank portion of said die above the arm 14 is a magnetic coil 2S, placed in connection with any suitable source of electrical supply by Wires 29,

llhe traine ll. with the parts connected therewith, as shown, is adapted to be suspended troni a crane not shown, by means of a bale with which a hook 5f) connects, said hook being suspended from said crane Uy chains in the usual manner. and in suspending the machine in this manner, the same may be moved along the work piece or plates 16, as shown, to heat rivet blanks in the usual manner, but it will be understood that the machine may be rigidly connected with a floor or bedplate and the work piece moved therethrough, as is customary 4in varions types of machines of the class to which this invention relates.

By means of the magnetic coil 28, the die 2G is magnctized and serves to hold the plates i6, and rivet blank in firm Contact with said die in the operation of heading said rivet as hereinbofore described.
ln the construction shown in Figs. 4 and 5 \1 have indicated a hand operated electrode (il), which is substituted for the electrode 38, and which is connected with the free end of the lead 3l by means of a Contact. casing 61, with which the water supply and discharge pipes 52 and 53 are connected, and a lever. device G2 is pivoted to the ar1n 13 at (33, and provided with oppositely directed arms 64 and 65. the arm 64 being connected with the contact casing 6l as shown at 66, and a weight 6T is connectedwith the end l)ortion ot' the arm G5. The arm G4 is provi( d adjacent to the end thereof, with a handle member, whereby the electrode 60 may be depressed against the action ot' the weight (3T, to bring it in Contact with rivet blank 45 as will be readily understood.
The construction shown in Figs. 4 and 5 shows a hand ope 'ated electrode which is substituted for the pneumatically operated electrode 38, as will be readily understood, but the operation of the machine as shown in- Figs. l and 5 will be exactly the same as that shown in Figs. l and 2 thereof, as will `be readily understood.
With my improvement, a work piece may be heated to the desired extent by electrodes brought in Contact therewith, pneumatically or otherwise, and then fashioned by dies brought into alinement. therewith, or said work piece may be moved when heated into position between forming' dies, as will be readily understood, and while I have shown certain details of construction for accomplishing the desired result, it will be understood that my invention is not limited to the various combinations and arrangement Aof parts hereinbefore shown and described, and changes therein and modifications thereof, may be made within the scope of the appended claims without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advam tages.

20. ln a machine of the class described, a stationary electrode adapted to support a work piece and an elect-rode movable toward and from said stationary electrode and adapted to heat the vvorlr piece supported therein, and means independent of both said electrodes for fashioning said heated Work piece.
