Abstract

1424325 Rolling metals BICC Ltd 19 June 1973 [20 June 1972 18 Sept 1972] 28917/72 and 43143/72 Heading B3M [Also in Division C7] Copper is continuously cast to form a continuous billet, whose cross-section is reduced by rolling and/or swaging in-line with the casting process and while the copper is still hot, to form rod, and immediately before the rolling and/or swaging the billet surface is regenerated by exposure to the reducing action of a vapour comprising at least one mono-functional alcohol or aldehyde, under conditions inhibiting combustion of the vapour until a substantially oxide-free surface is produced. The vapour may be of methanol, ethanol, isopropanol, the monomethyl or monoethyl ether of ethylene glycol, formaldehyde or acetaldehyde, and may be under an inert gas blanket or in an enclosure, or admixed with steam; e.g. 5-20 wt. per cent aq. CH 3 OH may be evaporated to produce the atmosphere ; the Cu temp. may be at least 350‹ C.; exposure may take place also during and/or after rolling, and the article is cooled before exposure to air.
