Abstract

1424294 Electro-plating cylinders ELECTROCOATINGS Inc 21 March 1974 [23 March 1973] 12715/74 Heading C7B The internal walls of a cylinder which is closed at one end except for one or more apertures formed therein are electro-plated by locating a cylindrical anode within the cylinder so as to define an annular passage between the anode and the cylinder, and pumping an electrolyte through the annular passage and out through the apertures in the closed end of the cylinder whilst passing electric current between the anode and the cylinder; the cylindrical anode being provided with a shield or shielding material at or near the end thereof adjacent the closed end of the cylinder, thereby preventing electric current from flowing to said closed end of the cylinder. As shown, anode 50 comprising a steel interior 52, platinum-plated titanium outer sleeve 54 and electrically insulating shield 56 is positioned on base 28 which supports an encircling dyke 44. Positioned about the anode is engine cylinder 30, the inner surface of the cylindrical portion 32 of which is to be plated; both support of the cylinder and sealing and electrical insulation between the cylinder 30 and the dyke 44 being provided by the combination including support ring 66, clamp 76, &c. Electrolyte is supplied via conduit 20 and apertures 62 to reservoir 60 and thence through the annular space between the cylinder and anode to exit through the valve passageway 38 in the cylinder head. The metal deposited may be chromium.
