Abstract

1423778 Sliding seals; piston seals FICHTEL & SACHS AG 8 Feb 1973 [12 Feb 1972] 6355/73 Headings F2B and F2T A sealing arrangement, e.g. for a piston-rod 3 or piston (not shown) in an hydraulic shock absorber, comprises a sealing element 5 of elastic plastics material, and a prestressed elastomeric body 4 for urging the element 5 against the surface to be sealed. The body 4 may be located in a groove of a guide element 1, a cover member 7 being so arranged that medium from a high pressure space 8 may act on the body 4 to stress it, and a rigid ring 6, e.g. of sintered material, supports the element 5. Alternatively, Fig. 3, the body 4 may be located in a grooved support insert 9 and passages 10 may facilitate action of the pressure fluid on the body 4. Further, Fig. 4, the body 4 may be acted upon by a prestressing spring 11 exposed to the high pressure medium and supported by a portion 23 of a support 12, a stop ring 21 preventing damage of the support 12 in the event of excessive piston travel.
