Abstract
1423012 Electroluminescence NORTHERN ELECTRIC CO Ltd 22 Feb 1973 [22 Feb 1972 24 Feb 1972] 20127/75 Divided out of 1423011 Heading C4S [Also in Divisions F4 and H1] A light-emitting device comprises a semiconductor electroluminescent element (e.g. PN- element 2) mounted at the focus of a parabolic reflector 10, and transparent insulating encapsulant 14 with polylenticular lens formation on the front face, each cavity having an arcuate part-spherical inner portion and a conical outer portion. The lens formation comprises a plurality of concavities forming one or more series of identical shapes. The visual appearance comprises a plurality of bright spots filling the desired shape. An optical filter improves contrast. PN device 2 may be GaP : Zn, O, and the reflector provides electrical contact to lead 13. Wire 16 connects to positive lead 17. The sequence of assembly is outlined and the lamps are preferably moulded with the front face down so that any imperfections occur on the back part. Inclined peripheral portion 18 causes a small portion of the light to emerge at approximately 90 degrees to the vertical axis of the lamp. Pedestal 11 ensures light is not reflected on to the central part of face 12 already illuminated directly. If s/c element 1 emits non- visibly (e.g. in the infra-red), then an upconverting phosphor may be coated directly on the s/c element, or by coating on a further support. Indicator and signal lamp applications are instanced. Reference is made to PN junctions 0À015 inches square.
