1422182 Measuring moisture content electrically THUNDER SCIENTIFIC CORP 25 May 1973 25197/73 Heading G1N [Also in Division H1] A moisture sensing element comprises a pair of electrodes 12 embedded in spaced apart relationship in a crystal lattice 11 produced by baking a mixture of V 2 O 5 and Cr 2 O 3 and defining interstitial spaces between the electrodes, the interstitial spaces being such that molecules in an atmosphere being monitored drift randomly into and out of the spaces, the volumetric electrical resistance of the material between the electrodes thereby varying as a function of the per cent of water vapour in the atmosphere. The element is formed by mixing a one-to-one ratio by weight of Cr 2 O 3 and V 2 O 5 to form a paste, ageing the mixture for at least two weeks, shaping a predetermined quantity of the mixture, placing a pair of platinum-iridium electrodes a predetermined distance apart and overlapping by a predetermined distance on the shaped mixture, shaping the mixture around the electrodes as shown in Fig. 5b, air drying the element for at least 12 hours, baking the element in a furnace in the presence of Al 2 O 3 doping chips for a predetermined time at a predetermined temperature, cooling the element to a predetermined temperature, and further cooling the element to ambient temperature by quenching. A glass frit may be formed over a body portion of the element. In use the element is placed in circuit with a fixed resistor and an A.C. source, the voltage across the fixed resistor being a measure of the humidity of an atmosphere in which the element is placed, Fig. 9 (not shown).
