Abstract

1421969 Electrostatic precipitator; centrifugal separator NISSAN MOTOR CO LTD 4 June 1973 [29 Nov 1972 (3)] 26590/73 Headings B2J and B2P [Also in Divisions F4 and H2] An air purifier with both electrostatic and centrifugal separation actions comprises a generally cylindrical casing 20 having a tangentially arranged air inlet 28 and a central outlet opening 48; a dust collector electrode 38, 40, 42 connected to a first electrical terminal and arranged to provide a helically extending passageway 46 between the inlet and the outlet; at least one charging electrode 50 helically extending in and along the passageway 46 and connected to a second electrical terminal so that an electrostatic field may be established between the charging and collecting electrodes; a deodorizing filter 69 located immediately upstream of the outlet 48; and an electrode 96 for introducing negative ions into the air stream issuing from the purifier. A pre-ionizing electrode (54) Fig. I (not shown) may also be provided. The collector electrode consists of a layer 40 of filter material, e.g. glass fibre, sandwiched between conductive layers 38 and 42 which may be of sheet metal and wire mesh respectively. Air conditioning apparatus. The air purifier may form part of the air conditioning system of a motor vehicle, the purifier 146 being associated with air apportioning valves 130, 136 a blower 142 and a heater core 140 as shown in Fig. 12. A suitable structural arrangement of purifier and valves is described with reference to Fig. 13 (not shown).
