Abstract

931,625. Electrostatic air purifiers. ENGELHARD HANOVIA Inc. Sept. 19, 1961 [Feb. 24, 1961], No. 33528/61. Class 117. In an electrostatic air purifier wherein air is drawn into one end of a casing 1 through a glass wool filter 6 by an electric fan 10 which blows the air through a grid of interleaved oppositely charged electrode plates 15, 15<SP>1</SP> and thence through a charcoal filter 7 at the other end, the air is ionized between the fan 10 and the electrodes 15, 15<SP>1</SP> by two mercury vapour discharge lamps 12, 13, the envelopes of which are of fused silica containing boron oxide and traces of aluminium, sodium and arsenic oxides so that they transmit ultra-violet radiation substantially free of ozone-producing radiation. As shown, the electrode plates 15, 15<SP>1</SP> are respectively connected to common conductive sheets 17, 16 embedded in insulators 20, 19 which serve also to space adjacent plates, the sheet 17 contacting a terminal strip 29 and an end electrode 15<SP>1</SP> contacting a terminal strip 29 and an end electrode 15<SP>1</SP> contacting a strip 32 earthed to the casing walls. The filters 6, 7 and electrode assembly 15, 16<SP>1</SP> are withdrawable through the top 2 of the casing, and the electrodes 15, 15<SP>1</SP> may be of foil-covered paper to form a disposable unit.
