Abstract

1421898 Laminates D DEVAKUL 28 Dec 1972 [18 Jan 1972] 2374/72 Heading B5N [Also in Division F3] A method of making laminated armour plate comprises compressing foamed plastics into a sheet and bonding a steel plate, thinner than the plastics sheet to each face of the compressed plastics sheet. In a modification of the method, a second sheet of compressed foamed plastics is bonded to the outer face of one of the steel plates and a third steel plate bonded to the outer face of the second sheet of compressed foamed plastics. In a preferred procedure, fifty sheets of polystyrene foam each of one inch thickness and impregnated with a fireproofing agent are stacked and compressed in an hydraulic press to produce a sheet of approximately one inch thickness. A solvent or adhesive is then applied to one face of this followed by a steel plate and the procedure repeated to produce a sandwich which is then compressed on a hydraulic press. The armour plate may be used in armour plated vehicles, ships or aircraft, being attached thereto by means of a steel frame in conventional manner.
