1421841 Gas lighters ROWENTA-WERKE GmbH 19 March 1973 [23 March 1972] 13026/73 Heading F4F An electrically ignited gas lighter comprises an energy portion 30 and a hand lighter 9 detachably connected thereto, the hand lighter including a gas tank 9.1, a gas valve 35, a burner 10 and an ignition spark gap 8, 10, and the energy portion including means for generating an ignition voltage for application to the spark gap, means being provided for opening the gas valve and establishing a spark across the gap on detaching the hand lighter from the energy portion and for closing the gas valve on returning the hand lighter to the energy portion. The energy portion 30 comprises a stand housing a battery or accumulator 1, switch 3, capacitor 4 transformer 5-7 and lead 28 connecting with a sliding contact 51 provided on a wall of a recess 31 which receives the hand lighter 9, the contact 51 co-operating with the metal body of the hand lighter. A lead 29 to electrode 8 in the hand lighter connects via contact 36 with electrically conducting pin 54 connected to the secondary winding 7 of the transformer 6, and switch 3 is operated by a pin 55 which abuts the base of the hand lighter. The gas supply valve 35 comprises a tubular casing 41 having a gas supply pipe 46 the inlet of which is controlled by a diaphragm 42 movable by a pin 48 which contacts a projection 50 on recess 31. As the hand lighter is withdrawn from the stand, gas valve 35 opens whereupon switch 3 is operated to discharge capacitor 4, the resultant voltage induced in secondary winding 7 of the transformer being applied via contact 36 and pin 54 and contact 51 and the body of the hand lighter to the spark gap defined by electrode 8 and burner 10. The lighter may be powered by a piezo-electric device, a magneto or photoelectric cells. The hand lighter may be held in the recess by co-operating projection and recess 103, 102 as shown, or by a spring-loaded slider on the stand which engages a groove on the hand lighter, a bayonet fitting, a leaf spring or magnetic means. The burner valve 38 may also serve as the gas valve, the burner 10 being raised to open the valve by a spring-biased forked lever. The pins 54, 55 may be replaced by a single pin. The stand may serve as an ash tray or container for cigarettes and may be adapted to receive several hand lighters.
