Abstract

1421711 Door stop devices L A MCLENNAN 22 March 1974 [26 March 1973] 12902/ 74 Heading E2A An abutment stop mechanism for blocking opening movement of a closure 1 swingable about an upright axis comprises a stop member 14, a mount 5 adapted for mounting adjacent to but independently of the closure in closed position and supporting said stop member for turning about an upright stop member turning axis, substantially parallel to the closure axis of swing, between a closure-blocking position of the stop member obstructing a predetermined opening-movement path of a stop-engageable portion of the closure and a closure-clearing position of the stop member out of the opening-movement path of the closure, in which closure-blocking position of said stop member a closure-engageable portion of said stop member spaced from such upright stop member turing axis is engageable by such stop-engageable portion of the closure to limit its movement along such predetermined-opening-movement path. The mount is located so that a line joining the stop member turning axis and the closure-engageable portion of the stop member in closure-blocking position is at an angle a of less than 45‹ to such predetermined opening-movement path of the stop-engageable portion of the closure, and there are latch means engageable between said mount and the stop member for preventing swinging of the stop member out of closure-blocking position relative to the mount. As shown, the stop member 14 and a keeper 18 are pivoted on a pintle 13 mounted in bosses 11, 12 of ears 9, 10 of the mount 5 and in the closure clearing position are biassed upwardly, as seen in Fig. 2, by a spring 23, the stop member and keeper having co-acting cam surfaces 32, 32'. When the stop member 14 and keeper are swung conjointly into the closure-blocking position when the door is closed and while the stop member is held manually in the swung position, Fig. 5, the wedging co-action of the cam surfaces causes spreading apart of the stop member and keeper resulting in movement of the stop member towards the boss 12 whereby the groove 17 in the stop member is pressed over the projection 16 of the ear 10; this latching action prevents the stop member from swinging out of the closure blocking position. The crowns of the cam surfaces move past the dead centre position whereby the recesses 33, 33' are engaged to maintain the keeper in a position to hold the stop member latched. The stop member is moved to the closure-clearing position by swinging the keeper 22 whereby the stop member is shifted axially by the spring 23 to clear the projection 16. In modifications, (a) a notch is formed in the ear 9 adjacent the stop member and for the reception of the shackle of a padlock, the latter positively holding the stop mechanism in the closure-blocking position, and (b) the mount includes an aperture for reception of the latch bolt of a door lock.
