Abstract

A door locking device (10) comprising a housing (12) and an arm (14) which is mounted on a pin (16) of the housing. The arm can be moved between an operative position and an inoperative position and can include locking means to secure the arm in the operative position. The housing may be secured to the frame of an up-and-over door so that the arm prevents door movement. The arm may be locked by fitting the hasp of a lock through holes in the arm housing. <IMAGE>

Description

Door Locking Device The present invention relates to a door locking device and more particularly to a door lock intended for use with garage door of the up and over type. In this type of door which can be either hand operated or motor driven the door is mounted on a counterbalanced lever and guide system so that the door moves between a position where it closes off the entrance to the garage into a position where it is adjacent to the garage roof and in a generally parallel position relative to the garage floor. In moving between these two positions the lower edge of the door moves both outwardly and upwardly whilst the upper edge of the door moves inwardly.
Apart from the storage of cars garages are commonly also used for the storage of miscellaneous household items and garden furniture, lawnmowers, tools and other garden machinery. The types of locks commonly used on up and over garage doors are relatively weak and therefore can be broken by burglars quite easily in order to obtain access.
The present invention seeks to provide a door lock which can prevent upward and outward movement of the lower edge of the door.
The present invention further seeks to provide a door locking device which is visible to potential thieves, and is sufficiently strong to deter attempts to effect entry.
Accordingly the present invention provides a door locking device intended for an up and over garage door, the device comprising a housing and an arm mounted on the housing which can be moved between an operative position in which the arm blocks the opening of the door and an inoperative position in which the door is free to move between the open and closed positions, the arm being securable by a locking means in at least the operative position and the housing is fixed in position adjacent the door.
The arm can be mounted on a pin and the arm can be secured in position by a lock in which the hasp passes through both an opening in the arm and an opening in the housing.
The pin can be circular in section over a part of its length and polygonal in section of the remainder of its length.
For example the pin can be square in section over a part of its length and the arm can have a square opening so it can rotate on the pin between the operative and inoperative positions and can be located in the inoperative position by engagement with the square section length of the pin.
The housing can be secured to the door frame, the brick work or pillar surrounding the door frame or for example a free-standing post or other means closely adjacent the door.
The housing can comprise two steel plates arranged in a spaced apart relationship and the whole housing can be fixed in position by suitable masonry or other bolts.
The locking device can be either left handed or right handed so that it can be positioned on either side of a garage door.
The locking device whilst particularly suitable for an up and over garage door can also be used in conjunction with other doors in order to prevent them from being opened.
In another arrangement the door locking device can be mounted in the ground in front of the garage door so that it can be raised to the operative position to prevent the door being opened and lowered into a recess provided in the ground in the inoperative position.
The present invention will now be more particularly described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which; Figure 1 shows a side elevation of one form of door locking device according to the present invention; Figure 2 shows a view on arrow A in figure 1; Figure 3 shows a view on arrow B in figure 2 of the locking device; Figure 4 shows the arm of the locking device shown in figures 1 to 3; and Figure 5 shows the pin of the locking device shown in figures 1 to 3.
Referring to the drawings a door locking device (10) comprises a housing (12) and an arm (14) which is mounted on a pin (16) of the housing.
The housing (12) comprises two steel (18, 20) plates arranged in spaced apart relationship on three pins (22) which extend between the plates (18) and (20). The pin (16) has a part circular length (16A) and a part rectangular length (16B) and the arm (14) has a square section opening (14A) enabling the arm to be rotated on the circular (16A) of the pin (16) but also enabling the arm to be fixed in position on the pin by engagement with the square section length (16B).
The housing (12) has an opening (12A) which corresponds with an opening (14B) in the arm (14), and the openings (12A) and (14B) are aligned with one another when the arms in the operative position.
The housing (12) is secured in position for example by measuring bolts or any other suitable type of fastening device passing through openings (24) on the plate (20) of the housing.
Referring to figures 1 to 3 in which the arm (14) is shown in the operative position that is to prevent opening of an up and over garage door the circular section length (16A) of the pin (16) engaged by the square section opening (14A) in the arm (14) and the arm (14) is held in position by the hasp of a lock (not shown) which passes through the openings (12A) in the housing (12) and (14B) in the arm (14). If an attempt is made to open the garage, the lower edge of the door will contact the arm (14) and it will not be possible to open the door.
In order to move the arm (14) to the inoperative position the lock is removed and the arm (14) is rotated on the pin (16) until the arm (14) is in an upright position enabling the opening (14A) on the arm (14) to be engaged on the square section length (16B) of the pin (16). In this position the door of the garage can be opened.
The materials of the door lock device should resist and be weatherproof. Also the components of the device can be coloured or otherwise marked to render them visible.
It will be appreciated that the door lock device provides a simple and effective means of providing a visible barrier to the opening of the garage door. When the access to the garage is required the arm (14) can be readily moved to the inoperative position once the lock has been removed from the arm and the housing.
