Complete Specification for the invention entitled: COMBINED LOCK AND DOOR RESTRAINT The following statement is a full description of this invention, including the best method of performing it known to me/us:- 8633A:rk SO88633A:rk COMBINED LOCK AND DOOR RESTRAINT This invention relates to a combined lock and door restraint.
One known combined lock and door restraint has a bolt which is slidably mounted in a housing and is movable by means of an operating lever into and out of a recess in S*."oo a keeper member. The bolt is cut away to co-act with a oo restraint member pivotally mounted on the keeper member, such that if the bolt is only partially withdrawn and 0 the door is then opened, the restraint member co-acts with the bolt to limit opening of the door.
0 9 The known combined lock and door restraint has many S00 disadvantages. The bolt is not of the slam type and so 0 S0, so, if the user wants to exclude a visitor, he must t close the door and then turn the operating lever to 0o a 0shoot the bolt. Moreover, when leaving the premises, it is necessary to use a key to lock the door, rather than simply pulling it shut.
0 00 a It is an object of the present invention to provide a 0 00 combined lock and door restraint in which these and other drawbacks of the known device are overcome in a simple and efficaceous manner.
In accordance with the invention there is provided a lock housing, a main bolt slidably mounted in said i housing, an auxiliary bolt slidably mounted in the housing beside the main bolt, both of said bolts being spring-loaded to projecting positions and shaped for "slam" type operation, an operating member mounted on the housing for angular movement relative thereto, means coupling the operating member to the main bolt, so that turning of said operating member withdraws said Signaturt(s) of deciarant(s) (Noe*. An example of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a rear view of the lock with its c;over plate removed; Figure 2 is a plan view of the lock; Figures 3 and 4 are respectively side and front elevations of a combined keeper and restraint member; Figure 5 is a fragmentary rear view showing a key-operating cam; Figure 6 is a rear view like Figure 1 but showing another example of the invention; and Figure 7 is a fragmentary view like Figure 5 but showing this other example of the invention.
Referring firstly to Figures 1 and 2 the lock housing contains two slidably mounted bolts 11. and 12 mounted side by side. Each of these is movable independently of the other and is individually I3 spring-loaded by an associated spring 13 or 12b.
Furthermore each bolt has its projecting end shaped so as to be slam-operable. As shown, one face of each bolt is inclined to the direction of sliding movement thereof. Alternatively, of course, the end face of the bolt may be curved to provide this effect.
The bolt 11, which is the main bolt, is arranged so I that when the bolts are both in their projecting positions, as shown, to project further than the other j bolt, which is an auxiliary bolt intended only to co-act with a restraint member 14 on the keeper shown in Figures 3 and 4.
An operating member, in the form of a handle 16 is mounted on the housing, and is angularly movable about an axis perpendicular to the direction of slidable *Q °omovement of the main bolt 11 An arm 17 in the housing 10 is mounted on the operating member 16 and is d* provided adjacent its free end with a projecting peg 18 which co-acts with a cam face 19 on the bolt, such that 0. turning of the operating member 16 out of a normal rest position shown effects withdrawal of the main bolt.
t* The cam face 19 is effectively in the form of a shallow V-shaped notch, so that, in the rest position shown, the spring 13 not only holds the bolt 11 in its projecting position but also, through the interaction of the cam face 19 and the peg 18, holds the operating member 16 in the horizontally extending position shown.
The spring-loading of the auxiliary bolt 12 normally holds this bolt in a position defined by a fixed stop which co-acts with an abutment plate 21 on an extension 22 of the bolt. A lug 23 on the main bolt 11 is engageable with this abutment plate 21 to cause withdrawal of the auxiliary bolt, when required.
4 Turning now to Figures 3 and 4, the keeper 15 has a recess 15a to receive the main bolt 11. The restraint member 14 is pivotally mounted on the keeper IS as to be angularly movable about an axis 14a which is parallel to the direction of movement of the bolts when the door on which the lock housing is mounted, in use, is closed. A torsion spring (one end shown at 30) is included in this pivotal mounting to urge the restraint member to the rest position shown. The restraint member 14 has an elongated aperture 14b which is shaped ft at one end to allow the main bolt to extend through it into the recess 15a. The other end of the aperture 14b is tapered and is shaped to co-act with an undercut portion 12a of the auxiliary bolt 12. The keeper has a notch 15b which ensures that even in its projecting position the auxiliary bolt 12 does not engage the keeper.
S o In use, in the locked condition, the main bolt 11 i extends into the recess 15a to maintain the door shut and the bolt 12 extends through the aperture 14b in the restraint member 14. Turning of the operating member 1 16 in either direction through 90° effects complete S* withdrawal of the main bolt 11 both from the recess and from the aperture 14b. In this position the lug 23 j engages abutment plate 21 which acts as a yieldable stop, as the operating member 16 cannot be turned further without compression of the spring 12b. If the door is opened whilst the operatiig member is in this position, the auxiliary bolt 12, being still in position within the aperture 14b, will co-act with the restraint member, which will turn out of its rest position and limit opening movement of the door. If the user does not wish to admit a caller, he can simply release the operating member 16 and slam the door shut.
To open the door completely, it must first be reshut and the operating member can then be turned further so as to withdraw the auxiliary bolt 12 from the aperture in the restraint member 14. If the operating member is turned through a full 1800 the cam face 19 will again have the effect of holding the operating member in this position.
Si,, It will be noted that the lock and restraint combination described above can be used on right-hand or left-hand hung doors without difficulty. In one case the restraint member is in the position shown in Figure 3, i.e. it is upstanding on its pivot. In the Sother case it depends from its pivot. In both cases the restraint member is urged to its rest position by its spring-loading and not merely by gravity. This 00 arrangement compares favourably with the prior art locks referred to above in which the lock must be dismantled and reassembled to enable its hand to be 0 changed.
It should be noted that the auxiliary bolt cannot be withdrawn when the door is open against the restraint member, because of the co-action between the undercut portion 12a of the bolt 12 and the restraint member.
As shown in Figure 5, the bolts 11 and 12 can also be withdrawn using a key operable cam member 40. This member has a slot 40a which receives one end of a connecting strip which extends from the back of a key operated cylinder mounted on the outside of the door.
The cam 40 is of generally T-shaped design which has two wings 40b, 40c for engaging the lugs 23 on the bolt 11. These wings are shaped and dimensioned to allow 900 of turning movement of the cam member in either direction from a rest position to effect complete

I 44 I 4c 440C 4 44r 4 d 4 4 4r 1 40 6 withdrawal of the two bolts. This amendment provides a significant advantage as compared with the prior art locks mentioned above, in which two full rotations of the key are required to withdraw the bolts.
In the alternative form of the invention shown in Figures 6 and 7 (in which all reference numerals are increased by 100), the cam face 119 is not a notched surface, but a V-shaped surface so dimensioned that, the full retraction of the bolt 111 occurs with a less than 1800 turn of the handle 116. No overcentre action occurs, so that at all times release of the handle 116 permits the bolt to be spring-returned to its projecting position. A conventional catch device 150 is incorporated to latch the bolt 111 in its fully withdrawn position when required.
Instead of a symmetrically arranged cam member 40, the cam member 140 is unsymmetrically arranged and the slot 1 4 0 a therein is shaped to allow some lost motion between the drive spindle 141 and the cam member 140, This has a single peg 1 4 0 b for coacting with a single flat lug L23 on the bolt. In the position shown, the cam member 140 is in a normal locked position. By use of the key (not shown) the spindle 141 can be turned through 3600 in the clockwise direction to a deadlocked position in which the peg 1 4 0 b lies behind lug 123 and prevents withdrawal of the bolt. On the other hand, turning of the spindle 141 in the opposite direction through about 600 from the position shown will effect full withdrawal of the bolts 111, 112.
Claims (9)
1. A combined lock and door restraint comprising the combination of a lock housing, a main bolt slidably mounted in said housing, an auxiliary bolt slidably mounted in the housing beside the main bolt, both of said bolts being spring-loaded to projecting positions and shaped for "slam" type operation, an operating member mounted on the housing for angular movement relative thereto, means coupling the operating member to the main bolt, so that turning of said operating member withdraws said main bolt from its projecting position, and coupling the operating member to the auxiliary bolt with lost motion, so that said auxiliary bolt is withdrawn by further turning of the operating member, a keeper member having a recess for receiving said main bolt and a restraint member pivotally mounted on said keeper member, said auxiliary bolt and said restraint member co-acting with one another in use to limit opening of a door on which the housing is mounted When the door is opened with the operating member turned only sufficiently far to withdraw the main bolt. 4 4
2. A combined lock and door restraint as claimed in claim 1 in which the lost motion coupling between the operating member and the auxiliary bolt is provided by co-acting abutments on the main and auxiliary bolts.
3. A combined lock and door restraint as claimed in claim 1 or claim 2 in which the coupling between the operating member and the main bolt comprises a peg on the operating member which co-acts with a cam face on the main bolt.
4. A combined lock and door restraint as claimed in claim 3 in which said cam face includes a V-shaped 8 portion such that the spring-loading of the main bolt effects location of the operating member in a rest position.
A combined lock and door restraint as claimed in claim 4 ini which the operating member is turnable through 1800 in either direction to withdraw both bolts completely, said V-shaped portion coacting with said peg in the 1800 position of the operating member to hold the bolt withdrawn. t r
6. A combined lock and door restraint in which said *r*0 V-shaped portion is so dimensioned as to permit full withdrawal of the bolts without any overcentre action S of the operating member.
7. A combined lock and door restraint as claimed in V, any preceding claim in which the restraint member is o aspring-loaded to a rest position relative to the keeper.
8. A combined lock and door restraint as claimed in any preceding claim in which the auxiliary bolt has an undercut which engages in a slot in the restraint member, further withdrawal of the auxiliary bolt being prevented by such engagement when the door is opened with the restraint member engaged with the auxiliary bolt as aforesaid.
9. A combined lock and door restraint substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to and as shown in Figures 1 to 5 of the accompanying drawings.
