Abstract

1421119 Urea-formaldehyde foams BRITISH INDUSTRIAL PLASTICS Ltd 12 March 1973 [10 Dec 1971] 54314/71 Headings C3C and C3R A cured urea-formaldehyde material is obtained by forming a foamed mixture of (a) a solution of a urea-formaldehyde resin, (b) a solution of a hardener for the resin, and (c) two surface active agents, the one of higher foamforming or -stabilizing capacity and the other of higher surface-wetting capacity, and curing the resin. The wetting agent may be added before or after foaming the resin solution, or with the hardener, which may also be foamed. In examples foams are prepared from resin solutions containing a commercial UF resin of U : F ratio 1 : 1À6 and an ethylene oxide adduct of a synthetic fatty alcohol mixture, with (Examples 2 and 3) or without (Examples 1 and 4) a sodium dodecylbenzenesulphonate, and hardener solutions containing a commercial hardener and H 3 PO 4 (Example 1), formic acid and sodium dodecylbenzenesulphonate alone (Example 2), or with urea giving a final U : F ratio of 1 : 1À3 (Example 3), or free dodecylbenzenesulphonic acid.
