Abstract
A polyurethane sponge having at least 80% of the cells closed and having a density of 10-20 lbs./cu. ft. is prepared by curing an isocyanate terminated polyalkylene ether polyurethane with an aromatic diamine in the presence of, as blowing agent, an inert liquid which boils under the curing conditions, so that the resulting sponge becomes non-sticky (defined) within a half to three minutes. In Example (1), the reaction product of polytetramethylene-ether glycol of M.W. 1000 and tolylene diisocyanate was mixed with tolylene diisocyanate, 4,41 - methylene - bis - (o - chloroaniline), a siloxane surfactant, adipic acid catalyst and trichlorofluoromethane. The froth was poured into a mould and became nonsticky in 40 seconds. After curing for 1 hour at 120 DEG C., a product of density 14.1 lbs. per cu. ft. was obtained.
