Abstract

1420240 Drying elastomeric material US RUBBER RECLAIMING CO Inc 9 June 1973 27571/73 Heading F4G A process of drying wet elastomeric materials comprises the steps of advancing and compressing continuously supplied wet elastomeric material while venting water therefrom, recirculating by turning back a portion of the material during its further advance to release and expel additional water, further compressing the material, and then advancing the material against an outlet at an even greater pressure, i.e. 400 to 1200 lbs/sq inch, and at a temperature of 150 to 350‹ F. The apparatus for carrying out the process comprises a screw working in a tapered housing and fed from a hopper 12 by a ram 11. The pressure reduction step is achieved by the material passing a barrier 22 of the screw. Ploughs 30 are provided to increase turbulence in the material. Water passes out of the housing through a passage 35 and through a strainer 37. The outlet region 26 of the apparatus comprises a flaring passageway 40 leading to a pair of superposed screen plates 42, 44. A rotatable pelletizing knife 45 is provided. Various diameters of the feed channel are given as well as dimensions of the screen-plates. Fluid may be passed through passages 31, 32 to heat or cool the material.
