Abstract

1419869 Tunnelling WAYSS & FREYTAG AG 4 June 1973 [3 June 1972] 26476/73 Heading E1F Tunnelling apparatus comprises a cutter 2, a casing 1 surrounding the cutter, first and second bulkheads 18, 6 defining with the casing first and second chambers, the first bulkhead 18 having an opening 19 remote from its top, means 11 for supplying liquid to the second chamber and thus to the first chamber through the opening 19, a duct 16 for applying superatmospheric air to an upper surface 8 of the liquid in the second chamber, and means 20, 22, 14 for removing debris from the face of the tunnel. The debris is deflected by deflectors 20 on the cutter into the path of drag buckets 22 which elevate the debris and discharge it into a shaking shoot 14 leading through a lock 15 to a conveyer 10. Fine particles of debris are removed hydraulically by means of pumps through an exit pipe 12. The liquid includes a thixotropic sealing medium such as bentonite, and the liquid supply is controlled by a float-controlled pump (not shown). In an alternative embodiment, Fig. 2 (not shown), the first bulkhead (23) rotates with the cutter and has the drag buckets (29) mounted thereon. The first bulkhead (23) has, in this embodiment its opening (28) centrally located, debris being deflected through the opening by a frusto-conical surface (27) on the rotary shaft (3) of the cutter.
