Abstract

1415579 Mining machines; collecting firedamp BENDIX CORP 17 Sept 1973 [2 Oct 1972] 43439/73 Headings E1F and E1X A mining machine for use in mining rock from a tunnel face has on its chassis means 47 that permits of temporary supporting of the tunnel roof above the chassis and means 50 that allows of bolting of this temporarily supported roof permanently in position. The means 47 are preferably hydraulically powered jacks and the means 50 are rotary drive units to which can be fitted either drill driving means or roof bolt-handling means. The rock cutting means of the machine preferably comprises a jetting nozzle 22 mounted on a boom 24 extending forwardly from the chassis. Also mounted on the front of the chassis to extend about the boom is a collapsable shroud 40 for containing dust and methane gas released at the face during the cutting of the face. The shroud comprises a flexible membrane that is partially supported on arms 42 and has secured to its leading edge a tube 43 that can be inflated to cause the shroud to extend outwards to the wall of the tunnel, The rear of the shroud is connected about the intake of a conduit that extends to the rear of the machine and is associated with a pump that can cause the gas and dust to pass from the shroud through the conduit.
