Abstract
1352447 Rock-tunnelling or heading machines ANGLO - TRANSVAAL CONSOLIDATED INVESTMENT CO Ltd 26 July 1971 [31 July 1970] 34892/71 Heading E1 A rock-tunnelling or heading machine has a cutter head 6, which is mounted on a driven shaft 11 rotatably supported by the chassis 1 of the machine, and one or more cutting rotors 15, 26, the or each rotor being supported on the cutter head for rotation relative to the head about an axis 21 that is inclined a 80‹ or less to either the forward or rearward direction of the axis 16 of the shaft and pivotally carries rock-cutting hammers that swing freely between spaced stops on the rotor when the hammers are shattering rock from a face. Preferably one or a pair of oppositely disposed rotors are so mounted on the head that the axis of the rotor, or the axis of either or both rotors is offset from the axis of the shaft 11. The rotors, which may have different numbers of hammers mounted thereon, are driven by hydraulic motors that are mounted on the head and have a power supply passing through the shaft 11, which is driven by a further motor. Reaming rotors can be mounted on the head radially outwardly of and rearwardly of the or each cutting rotor. To the rear of the head a shield is positioned about the shaft 11, the shield having a flexible, peripheral rim engaging the wall of the excavation made by the head. A dust extractor is provided to draw off through the shield dust formed about the head. The chassis is supported in the excavation by driven wheels 2, 3 and the free running wheel 7 on a stabiliser boom. Rock is collected by rotor-mounted scoops 23 and fed to a conveyer 35.
